The color scheme of the Mass Rapid Transit Circular Line in New Taipei City will be a distinctive feature turning the transportation facility into a total work of art, New Taipei City Government said April 13.

International architect Emmanuelle Moureaux, who specializes in large-scale color projects, is working with local government on the color scheme for the line’s stations, viaducts, steel structures and carriages, so the completed line will be in harmony with the city skyline and give riders a full esthetic experience, NTCG said.

“This is the first time in Taiwan in which art has been a factor at the engineering design stage,” NTCG Transportation Department Commissioner Simon Shiao-lien Chao said. “Each station will be designated a theme color to reflect local characteristics.”

In the past, artistic considerations have only been an important factor at individual stations, Chao said, but this time the appearance of the entire line has been designed as a whole.

According to Chao, overall inspiration for the design is the idea that the first stage of the line, which is mainly above ground, will be like a dragon threading its way swiftly through the bustling cityscape. The train will be treated as a colorful dragon, and the brightly painted silver acoustic barriers will be like its scales.

The 14.5 kilometer-long first section from Dapinglin Station in Xindian District to New Taipei Industrial Park Station in Xinzhuang District, due for completion in 2016, comprises 13 elevated stations, 8 kilometers of steel beams, 10 kilometers of acoustic barrier and around 200 steel pillars, all of which will be brightly painted on top of an anti-rust undercoat.

The color scheme will reflect such concepts as nature and lifestyles of health and sustainability, NTCG said. The basic shade will be yellow, with each station featuring a main color ranging from blue, brown, green, orange, pale blue, pale green, pale purple, pale yellow, silver-gray to silver-white. (SDH)
