Directed by Taiwan’s Tang Chen-yu, the film features veteran liquor artisans recounting tales of producing the powerful sorghum wine that has won county fame world over.
“It is important to record the past,” Tang said. “The documentary reveals the trials and tribulations residents faced in distilling kaoliang while struggling to stay alive during battles between ROC and communist mainland Chinese forces.”
The project, three years in the making, also features doorstop interviews with locals vividly recounting distilling-related experiences over the past 65 years.
Tang, a former member of the ROC armed forces, has produced several documentaries on the county where he once served. “I have fond memories of my military days on Kinmen and learned a great deal about the area’s history,” he said.
A free screening of the film is scheduled for June 15 at Fuzhong 15 Documentary Cinema in New Taipei City. (DF-JSM)
