Taiwan ranks second on the list of the world’s top 10 safest countries to live, according to Lifestyle9—a U.S.-based fashion and lifestyle website.

“Taiwan is one of the safest places to reside in terms of less exposure to violent crimes and robbery,” the website said. “People are more tenderhearted … and generally more honest.”

The country’s crime and safety rate variables of 16.26 and 83.74, respectively, saw it finish behind Japan at 13.11 and 86.89. It came in ahead of Hong Kong, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, Malta, Luxembourg, Georgia, Bahrain and Singapore in that order.

Deputy Minister of the Interior Chen Chwen-jing said he was not surprised by the ranking. “The government is committed to maintaining national safety, with its efforts receiving worldwide recognition.”

Such progress is further underscored by Taiwan’s counter-terrorism and anti-human trafficking efforts, he said, citing a tier 1 classification in the U.S. Department of State’s 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report—the fifth consecutive year the country has notched up this accomplishment.

According to the website, Taiwan is a country where people are quick to offer help and tourists can enjoy themselves in a danger-free environment. “Women feel perfectly safe and are not nerve-wracked about what could occur, particularly going out late at night. In this stable country, every citizen feels very safe.”

The website’s list is based on crime statistics from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations. It also incorporates key factors such as a nation’s frequency of natural disasters, corruption and crisis management capability. (LCJ-JSM)
