“The project is a testament to our efforts in enhancing the local cultural environment and encouraging reading among residents,” New Taipei Mayor Eric Chu said. “We believe the library will successfully provide a variety of amenities and services and prove a real asset for the city.”
Work on the new 13-story facility in Banqiao District kicked off in September 2012. Once finished, it will offer 24/7 access to a number of services beginning with multimedia and study rooms.
In addition, the library provides a self-service book collection machine. Readers can request a book and retrieve it 30 seconds later or at a time of their choosing.
“Many bookstores worldwide are proving popular for opening day and night,” Chu said. “There is no reason why libraries cannot follow suit and do more to satisfy the appetites of book lovers.”
Chu said the facility, which replaces an existing three-story library constructed in 1983, also boasts sections for users of all ages. “For example, the one servicing seniors is equipped with more chairs and video magnifiers to enhance the reading experience.
“We will launch more cutting-edge services at the library going forward and expect the facility to be warmly welcomed by those passionate about culture and reading in New Taipei.” (DF-JSM)
