The station’s 4,500-panel glass main dome, measuring 30 meters in diameter and covering an area of 660 square meters, is one of the top reasons for its inclusion on the 17-entry list. The facility was also praised for possessing an ecclesiastical appearance.
“Half metro station, half kaleidoscope, this church to commuting revolves around a dazzling ‘Dome of Light’ said to be the largest glass work in the world,” CNN said. “It should come as no surprise that it has been proposed as a venue for mass weddings.”
The top five entries are Fulton Transit Center in New York, Westfriedhof in Munich, Toledo in Naples, Komsomolskaya in Moscow and Olaias in Lisbon.
Apple Hu, public affairs manager with station operator Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp., welcomed the facility’s listing and said she is hopeful the report will attract more interest in the two-line metro system.
But this is not the first time for the station to feature in CNN Travel’s content this year. In January, it was mentioned in a piece outlining 10 reasons to love Kaohsiung.
“We are extremely pleased with CNN’s repeated reports about Formosa Boulevard Station and look forward to it becoming a hot spot for international tourists,” Hu said.
The facility, designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata and titled “Wind, Fire and Time,” is considered one of the best public art pieces among the metro’s 38 stations. (SSC-JSM)
