New Taipei City Library’s main building commenced operations May 10, offering lovers of literature in northern Taiwan unparalleled access to an array of facilities and services.
“Libraries are icons of a city and essential parts of urban life,” New Taipei City Mayor Eric Chu said. “This state-of-the-art amenity is certain to become a source of great pride and cultural inspiration for the metropolis.”
According to Chu, more than 100 local libraries have been renovated and 25 new facilities created since he took office in December 2010. “NTCL is a testament to the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the local cultural environment and encourage reading among residents.”
Covering 6,136 square meters in Banqiao District, NTCL comprises 10 above-ground floors and three below. Resembling a giant book shelf, the library offers access to Taiwan’s biggest collection of 650,000 books and 1,100-plus journals and magazines.
In addition to its diamond-level green building certification, the facility is equipped with a smart self-service book collection machine enabling readers to request and retrieve a book within 30 seconds. It also offers 24/7 access to its first and fourth floors.
Tang Feng-cheng, chairman of Taipei City-based Foundation of Universal Design Education, welcomed the inauguration of NTCL and praised the building’s design.
“Some of the greatest challenges to wheelchair-using library patrons are narrow passageways and carpet flooring,” Tang said. “NTCL’s level floors and adjustable tables make visits a stress-free experience.”
An official with the city’s Cultural Affairs Department said NTCL strives to create a caring atmosphere and comfortable reading environment for patrons of all ages. “We believe the facility will soon become a must-visit destination for locals seeking to stimulate their minds and decompress in a comfortable environment outside the home.” (SFC-JSM)
