President Lai Ching-te said Jan. 20 during the first internal briefing of the year at the Ministry of the Interior National Police Agency that the government is working hard to crack down on criminal activity, ensure social order and protect people.

According to Lai, the police play a key role in maintaining social order and supporting prosperity by remaining on post around the clock throughout the year. The president lauded the NPA for combating fraud, implementing reform measures and enhancing staff benefits last year, adding that the police’s dedication and service are immensely appreciated by the government and people.

To demonstrate the government’s commitment to countering scams, four regulations were amended and promulgated in July last year, he said. Through joint collaboration, 2,430 fraud cases were uncovered in 2024, with assets worth NT$14.4 billion (US$438.92 million) confiscated in the process, and raids were conducted on more than 700 criminal organizations. The government will not rest on its laurels, Lai said, adding that there are other policy measures in the pipeline to enhance supervision of the digital economy and strengthen law enforcement. He also urged the police force to continue their good work to safeguard property and security.

The government is rolling out further reform measures to offer police officers enhanced benefits, streamlined workloads and more effective performance of duties to achieve a better work-life balance, the president said.

Lai commended the NPA for holding several international events in 2024 with participation of senior police officers from 45 countries. The government will continue to promote such cross-border cooperation and exchanges, he added. (SFC-E)
