Taiwan signed a memorandum of understanding on emergency medical cooperation with Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly, underway through May 27 in Geneva, underscoring the country’s commitment to advancing global health.

The pact was inked by Ministry of Health and Welfare Minister Chiu Tai-yuan and HUG Director General Robert Mardini May 23, marking a new phase of joint efforts, the ministry said.

A previous MOU on emergency medicine signed by the MOHW and HUG in 2019 enabled reciprocal personnel visits to conduct training and upgrade response capabilities while jointly engaging in international disaster relief efforts. The new agreement expands the scope to areas including contagious diseases, digital health, education, medical technology, noncontagious disease prevention and public health, the ministry added.

In his remarks, Chiu voiced his appreciation to the hospital for its long-standing trust and support. He added that the agreement will facilitate the exchange of medical knowledge and technologies.

According to the MOHW, HUG is a major medical teaching and research institution in Europe that plays a key role in global health. The new MOU is expected to enhance Taiwan’s networking with European medical agencies.

The signing followed a forum organized by the Taiwan Society of Health-System Pharmacists May 21 in Geneva. At the event, Chiang Chih-kang, director general of the Taiwan Food and Drug Administration, shared the nation’s strategies for managing and mitigating drug shortages, the MOHW said. (POC-E)
