Minister Without Portfolio Lin Ming-hsin welcomed a delegation from the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Germany Sept. 2 in Taipei City, highlighting bilateral dedication to upholding human rights and transitional justice.

The group was led by Anna Kaminsky, who is managing director of the government-funded organization. The foundation was established in 1998 by the German parliament.

Lin said that Taiwan has systematically promoted transitional justice since 2016. He cited the disclosure of political documents, redressing of judicial wrongs, indemnification for political victims, and preservation and revitalization of sites where injustice was committed as evidence for his statement, adding that many of these practices were inspired by Germany’s process.

The minister said that the government has built a fund for facilitating transitional justice, long-term care and social welfare using assets which had been misappropriated during the White Terror, a period of authoritarian rule from 1945 to 1992.

Kaminsky responded by sharing that she was amazed at the progress made to advance justice between her first trip to Taiwan and her present third visit. She added that new, diverse solutions will be required to stimulate public awareness in the face of challenges from disinformation disseminated on social media by artificial intelligence and malicious actors who misuse and misinterpret historical facts.
