MODA hosts APEC privacy protection symposium

The Ministry of Digital Affairs staged a workshop on privacy enhancing technologies under the Asia Pacific Economy Cooperation Sept. 12 in Taipei City, highlighting Taiwan’s commitment to jointly forging a more resilient digital ecosystem.
 
Representatives from the APEC Digital Economy Steering Group were present alongside experts from Belgium, Canada, Chile, Japan and Thailand.
 
In remarks opening the event, Digital Minister Lin Yi-jing noted that artificial intelligence technologies will have a profound impact on the world, adding that safeguarding privacy is an important issue to be considered when governments or corporations disclose information for AI startups. He described the workshop as a chance to explore ways to strike a balance between data usage and privacy protection.
 
Natascha Gerlach, director of privacy policy for the Brussels-based Centre for Information Policy Leadership, gave the keynote, in which she emphasized that privacy enhancement can facilitate government-corporate promotion of AI innovation and cross-border cooperation.
 
Speaking on the topics of policy and system design, Runa Augus, senior director of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada’s Privacy and Data Protection Policy Directorate, and Kohei Kurihara, CEO of Japanese company Privacy by Design Lab, shared their knowledge of and experiences with cross-border data transmission and multilateral collaboration.
 
Talks in the afternoon focused on technological innovation and practical applications, the ministry stated.
 
With emerging technologies becoming major tools for global data governance, the MODA pledged to continue strengthening domestic capability to enhance Taiwan’s competitiveness and influence in digital management. (POC-E)
