The ROC government has identified five new sectors for strategic promotion as part of efforts to optimize the country’s industrial structure, Premier Sean C. Chen said Aug. 14.
“Revamping Taiwan’s economic structure is a prerequisite for building sustainable competitive advantages,” Chen said. “All relevant ministries and agencies have been directed to focus on this goal.”
Sectors targeted for development are information services, innovative textiles for fashion design, logistics, machine tools and smart living. Concrete results should be seen by 2015 in the form of more job offerings and expanded output.
Chen made the announcement following a Ministry of Economic Affairs briefing at which senior officials brought him up to speed on the implementation of ongoing economic stimulus projects.
According to the premier, the MOEA has “taken the lead” in mapping out specific action plans, and he expects these to serve as models for other agencies in promoting designated sectors.
MOEA Minister Shih Yen-shiang said the five sectors will be assisted in developing manufacturing services, introducing advanced technologies, expanding their global presences and identifying niche markets.
The ministry is also set to launch a project aimed at strengthening the private sector’s R&D capabilities in 10 specific fundamental technologies, including advanced manufacturing; high-performance displays, lighting and textiles; and high-end semiconductor and medical equipment.
“These capabilities are key to the long-term development of Taiwan’s manufacturing sectors,” Shih said, adding that the MOEA is consulting other government organizations on complementary measures and talent cultivation. (JSM)
