The ROC government, in collaboration with industry, has established a Cloud Open Lab for the testing of cloud computing applications, equipment and systems, Minister without Portfolio Chang San-cheng announced Sept. 24.

The administration expects to allocate more than NT$7 billion (US$238.7 million) to cloud computing, with the lab’s operation and testing results to be used in developing infrastructure for planned government cloud-building programs for police administration, food products, health, environment, agriculture, transportation, disaster prevention, culture, education and other areas of governance, Chang said.

More than 30 enterprises, government agencies and research institutions have joined the open lab project, including the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Taiwan Mobile Co. Ltd., Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd., Oracle Taiwan Inc., Far Eastone Telecommunications Co. Ltd. and IBM Taiwan Corp.

Chang said as an example that by providing pretesting, the new platform will reduce risk in the procurement of information hardware and software, as well as allow for fair market competition.

If the cloud-building project goes well, it could “power the export of our scientific and technological know-how,” Chang noted. (SB-THN)
