Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) opened five shows on international food in Taipei City June 26, aiming to help local businesses find buyers worldwide.
“The food industry spearheaded Taiwan’s economic takeoff in the 1950s, enabling the country to earn much-needed foreign exchange,” ROC Minister of Economic Affairs Chang Chia-juch said at the shows’ launch ceremony.
“Following the improvement of manufacturing techniques, Taiwan’s food industry is now more diverse.”
The shows accurately represent the food supply chain in Taiwan through exhibitions on global cuisines; food processing and pharmacy equipment; hotel, restaurant and catering industries; and packaging.
Sharon Su, a TAITRA project manager, said a highlight of the shows is the inaugural Taiwan International Halal Expo, which aims to assist local food manufacturers tap Muslim export opportunities.
“We hope the expo will give manufacturers an insight into Muslim markets and halal certification,” she said, adding that an event matching 14 Muslim buyers with 38 local businesses is scheduled for June 27.
Running from June 26-29, the shows feature 1,557 manufacturers and are expected to attract more than 60,000 participants from home and abroad.
According to TAITRA, 48 food service distributors from 15 countries participating in procurement meetings with 158 local companies are expected to generate more than US$37 million in business. (KML-JSM)
