Moody’s Investors Service said Oct. 23 that Taiwan’s Aa3 sovereign bond rating reflects the economy’s robust growth outlook over the next five years, which in turn is supported by closer trade relations with mainland China. The economy’s fundamentals and a flexible policy framework provide resilience to external economic and financial shocks, the report said. Fiscal consolidation remains one of Taiwan’s key challenges given that its deficit and general government debt are above the levels of comparable rated peers.


TheROC Legislative Yuan announced Oct. 22 that Andrew Li-yan Hsia,representative to Indonesia, will become deputy minister of national defense. Hsia previously headed the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York, and served as deputy minister of foreign affairs. National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Department of Construction Engineering professor Chen Shi-shuenn will be a minister without portfolio and head of the Cabinet’s Public Construction Commission. Taipei City-based lawyer Jaclyn Tsai will be a minister without portfolio and chairwoman of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission.


An industry-university cloud computing applications alliance jointly established by the Industrial Development Bureau under the ROC Ministry of Economic Affairs and six universities in northern Taiwan was launched Oct. 22, the MOEA said. The alliance aims at cultivating talent, creating a sound R&D environment for the development of experimental innovative cloud applications and finding synergy between industry and academia to spur innovative cloud application services.


Yehliu in Wanli Township on Taiwan's northern coast came top of a poll to find the nation’s 10 most scenic spots, said the Forestry Bureau under the ROC Council of Agriculture Oct. 22. Yushan, Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County and Jinguashi in New Taipei City took the next three places in that order. Spots were rated according to scientific research value, geographic or topographic importance to Taiwan, scenic uniqueness, diversity value as well as educational and recreational value. (SDH)
