Lin Hwai-min, founder of internationally renowned modern dance company Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, is set to be profiled in an upcoming U.K. television show spotlighting the world’s leading choreographers, Cloud Gate announced July 26.
Produced by TV channel Sky Arts, the documentary series will highlight acclaimed contemporary dance choreographers from around the world. The program is scheduled to premiere in 2018 and will be broadcast in countries across Europe, including the U.K., Germany and Italy.
According to Cloud Gate, the episode on Lin will examine his life, creative process and the concepts behind his work. It will also feature interviews with the choreographer in which he discusses how Taiwan’s rich and diverse culture informs and inspires his art, and how his desire to foster greater awareness of the performing arts led him to establish the nation’s first modern dance troupe.
The episode was filmed July 23-24 at Cloud Gate Theater, the company’s headquarters next to historic Huwei Fort in New Taipei City’s Tamsui District.
Formed in 1973, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre is renowned for innovative works incorporating local cultural elements such as calligraphy as well as Hakka and indigenous music. The troupe has conducted extensive international tours, performing across Asia, Europe and North and South America.
In line with Lin’s vision of promoting interest in the performing arts, Cloud Gate has staged free outdoor performances annually for more than two decades. He also founded Cloud Gate 2 with late Cloud Gate dancer Lo Man-fei in 1999 to showcase emerging talents through original choreography.
Lin has received numerous honors from prominent institutions across the world in recognition of his choreography and efforts to promote the arts, including the National Awards for Arts in 2002, the National Cultural Award in 2003, Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters from the French Ministry of Culture in 2008, and 2013 Samuel H. Scripps /American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement. (CPY-E)
