Establishment of direct flights between Taiwan and Russia follows the signing Oct. 16, 2013 of an aviation agreement between the two nations, the MOFA said.
Taiwan set up a representative office in the Russian capital in 1993. Since then bilateral trade has grown from US$700 million annually to US$4.7 billion, with more than 20,000 visitors per year, the MOFA said. Both sides enjoy flourishing technological, cultural and tourist exchanges and development.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration said the weekly flight will operate on a code-share basis with Taiwan-based China Airlines Co. Ltd. Flights operated by CAL will have a stopover in Bangkok, Thailand, with Transaero flying the Bangkok-Moscow leg. Transaero will also operate direct flights between Moscow and Taipei.
According to the CAA, there is plenty of scope for expanding Taipei-Moscow flights going forward, as the agreement allows for up to 28 flights per week. (SDH)
