Taiwan’s China Airlines won the International Trophy at the 129th Rose Parade held Jan. 1 in Pasadena, California, for its float highlighting the nation’s progress in promoting environmental protection.

Titled “Caring for Our Sea,” the CAL entry depicted a diver swimming in the waters off Taiwan alongside colorful marine life like clownfish, latticed butterflyfish and sea turtles. A scene of volunteers cleaning up beaches was also portrayed on the float so as to raise awareness about ocean conservation.

According to the international carrier based in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City, the concept reflected the parade’s theme of Making a Difference, which sought to recognize the contributions of volunteers to social development. In addition, the float spotlighted CAL’s efforts to foster engagement in environmental sustainability through organizing activities such as beach cleanups, the airline added.

Entered in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tourism Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the display also aimed to strengthen international awareness of Taiwan’s natural beauty and encourage more foreign visitors to explore the nation’s scenic attractions, CAL said.

First held in 1890, the Rose Parade is broadcast live across the U.S. as well as Central and South America. This year’s edition, featuring some 400 horses, 20 marching bands and 40 floats along a nearly nine kilometer route, was covered by major media outlets including Time magazine, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.

CAL floats have become a major highlight of the parade since the company first participated in 1987. The airline has now earned a total 27 accolades at the event, including winning the International Trophy on 21 occasions. (KWS-E)
