2018 Taipei Lantern Festival is underway in Ximending of Wanhua District, attracting large numbers of visitors from home and abroad while showcasing the area’s creative pedigree and many cultural and historical attractions.
Running until March 4, the annual festival organized by Taipei City Government is themed Dreams, Wishes, Happiness and Love. It features a wide range of activities, including art shows, cultural and creativity market, performances, traditional ceremonies and international displays by countries such as the Netherlands and Republic of China (Taiwan) diplomatic ally St. Kitts and Nevis, as well as cities like Matsuyama in Japan, Daegu in South Korea and Shanghai in mainland China.
During the official opening ceremony, Taipei City Mayor Ko Wen-je said the decision to keep the festival in Ximending for the second year running is in line with the local government’s goal of harnessing the power of the younger generation. “The move successfully infused youthful vitality into the traditional festivities.”
According to Ko, the festival exhibits an even stronger cultural slant this year given the recent completion of North Gate, or Beimen, Plaza and renovation of many historical buildings in the neighborhood. “Participants can enjoy the historical sites during daytime and the lanterns in the evening, he said, adding that they should also sample Ximending’s mouthwatering smorgasbord of street food.
The festival offers something for residents and visitors of all ages, Ko said, and is a venue where people can establish friendships and exchange ideas. This spirit of working hand in hand to promote harmony is perfectly captured in the main lantern of three Taiwan dogs touching paws in a circle, he added. (JSM)
