A night of fashion inspired by National Palace Museum’s collection and performances by leading hip-hop stars will be staged Oct. 27 to promote an online photo database of NPM’s 70,000-plus artifacts.
Hip-Hop Night at NPM, co-organized with Taipei City-based General Association of Chinese Culture, will be held at the museum’s southern branch in Chiayi County.
Four acclaimed designers from home and abroad— Taiwan’s Justin Chou, Bob Jian, and Jolin Wu and Canadian Daniel Wong—have created outfits for the event including pieces inspired by calligraphy, ceramic figurines of Taoist gods and enamel guardian lions. Singers Dwagie and PoeTek, renowned music producer DJ RayRay and Korean-American rapper Flowsik will entertain the audience between runway shows.
NPM Deputy Director Lee Ching-hwi said they invited the music stars and top designers to help attract attention to the museum’s Open Data archive, which offers searchable information and free image downloads encompassing more than 70,000 historical pieces.
The Open Data initiative provides users more diverse and creative ways to access the museum’s collection, GACC Vice President Chiang Chun-nan said, adding he hoped the show would highlight awareness of the online archive.
Established in 1965, NPM is home to the world’s largest collection of Chinese imperial art spanning 7,000 years from the prehistoric Neolithic period to the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). The institution opened a second branch in southern Taiwan’s Chiayi County in December 2015 showcasing artifacts from diverse Asian civilizations.
GACC, founded in 1967 and headed by President Tsai Ing-wen, works to deepen understanding of local traditions, foster international exchanges and facilitate the development of Taiwan’s cultural and creative industries. (CPY-E)
