The Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology opened Oct. 21 in Taipei City, the first time Taiwan has hosted the event and highlighting the government’s commitment to strengthening disaster prevention.
Around 140 academics and professionals working in fire safety from 20 countries and territories including Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, the U.K. and U.S. are attending the five-day forum, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
Participants are sharing the latest research and best practices on averting and dealing with emergencies. The event is organized by Central Police University in the northern municipality of Taoyuan and the Taiwan branch of the U.S.-based Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
MOI Minister Hsu Kuo-yung said as the premier fire safety seminar in the Asia-Pacific region, the symposium will help Taiwan advance its fire rescue capabilities and further international cooperation in disaster prevention.
Now in its 11th iteration, the triennial event features lectures, panel discussions, presentations of peer-reviewed papers and workshops spanning topics such as fire detection, human behavior in an emergency and tunnel blazes.
The first symposium was held in 1992 by the U.K-based International Association for Fire Safety Science. (KWS-E)
