The 55th Golden Horse Awards took place Nov. 17 in Taipei City, honoring the finest works in Chinese language cinema from the past 12 months.
Organized by Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival Executive Committee and chaired by two-time Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee, Taiwan’s answer to the Oscars attracted a record 667 submissions this year.
Taiwan’s Hsieh Ying-xuan claimed Best Leading Actress for her portrayal of an insecure housewife in “Dear Ex.” The black comedy also won the honors for Best Film Editing and Best Original Film Song.
Local artists took home two more trophies, with Ding Ning named Best Supporting Actress for her role as a gangster in “Cities of Last Things,” while 14-year-old Chung Chia-chun from the Tao indigenous group bagged Best New Performer for playing a young boy pining for his father in “Long Time No Sea.”
Best Feature Film went to four-hour drama “An Elephant Sitting Still” from China directed by the late Hu Bo. Martial arts feature “Shadow” collected the most awards: Best Director for Zhang Yimou as well as the honors for art direction, makeup and costume design, and visual effects.
Xu Zheng from China, who played a man smuggling cancer drugs in blockbuster “Dying to Survive,” won Best Leading Actor, while Hong Kong performer Ben Yuen’s role as a transgender Cantonese opera singer in the drama “Tracey” earned him Best Supporting Actor. (CPY-E)
