Strong expressions of support for Taiwan from members of the U.S. Congress are sincerely appreciated by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jan. 5.
Messages backing the nation’s freedom and democracy were issued on the official social media accounts of Sens. Cory Gardner, John Kennedy and Marco Rubio, and Reps. Andy Biggs, Don Bacon, Mario Diaz-Balart, Steve King, Vicente Gonzalez, Paul Gosar, Glenn Grothman and Ted Yoho.
These statements spotlight disapproval of China’s continued threats toward Taiwan and undermining of regional peace and stability, the MOFA said. They also demonstrate robust support for the resumption of constructive cross-strait talks, the ministry added.
A day earlier, the MOFA also conveyed gratitude to the EU for a statement backing the development of ties with Taiwan and the values cherished by both sides.
According to the ministry, the government is committed to deepening relations with EU member states and other like-minded nations so as to jointly safeguard the shared principles of freedom, democracy and human rights. The MOFA called on the global community to enhance efforts in promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
The messages of support for Taiwan were issued following a speech Jan. 2 by Chinese leader Xi Jinping in which he proposed further exploration of a “one country, two systems” scenario for Taiwan.
After the address, President Tsai Ing-wen reiterated that Taiwan will absolutely not accept “one country, two systems” and public opposition to it forms a Taiwan consensus. (KWS-E)
