Taiwan-EU group targets non-tariff trade obstacles

November 19, 2010

Taiwan and the EU have agreed to establish a task force for resolving non-tariff trade barriers, according to Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Lin Sheng-chung Nov. 18.

"The new group will discuss mutual recognition and certification of high-tech products and technology," Lin said, adding that addressing the issue of product specification was also on the agenda.

Lin's remarks came after the conclusion of the annual economic and trade consultation meeting between the two sides.

The deputy minister said the EU hopes cross-strait ties will continue improving in tandem with the already friendly Taiwan-EU relationship. "We expect Taipei and Brussels to work closely together and continue expanding investment and trade exchanges."

The signing of a Taiwan-EU economic cooperation agreement is a long-term goal for both sides, Lin said, adding that ongoing efforts of such groups as the European Chamber of Commerce Taipei will play a key role in realizing this objective. (SB-JSM)
