The final two stages of the Su-Hua Highway improvement project were opened by Premier Su Tseng-chang Jan. 6 in Yilan County, northeastern Taiwan.
Running from Suao Township in Yilan to Sioulin Township in eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County, the eight-tunnel, 12-bridge stages complete a 10-year, NT$55.17 billion (US$1.83 billion) project replacing the highway’s coastal route. They slash an hour off the intercounty trip, reducing total travel time to 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Su said the project underscores the government’s commitment to providing comfortable, convenient and safe transportation while spurring regional development and protecting the environment in affected areas.
The construction and engineering staff deserve full praise for outstanding performance and tireless dedication to seeing the challenging task through, Su added
Su-Hua Highway is part of Provincial Highway No. 9 running from Taipei City to Pingtung County in southern Taiwan along the east coast. The section between Taitung and Pingtung counties, which passes through the Central Mountain Range, is also known as the South Link Highway. (SFC-E)
