People subject to 14-day quarantine and their caretakers will be eligible for compensation from Taiwan’s government, the Central Epidemic Command Center said March 11.
According to the CECC, the rule applies retrospectively to those quarantined at home or in a designated facility as part of efforts to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak since the first confirmed case in Taiwan was reported Jan. 21. It also relates to anyone who takes time off from work to care for dependent family members in isolation.
Under the COVID-19 relief act promulgated Feb. 25, qualified individuals will receive NT$1,000 (US$33.33) per day for up to 14 days.
However, those on paid leave or found to be in violation of related regulations will not be eligible for compensation.
Online applications will open March 25, the CECC said, adding that claims can be lodged from the day after leaving quarantine for up to two years.
In light of the escalating situation in Europe and the Middle East, the CECC has raised its travel advisory to level two, the second highest possible, for Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. These countries join France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Spain on the list.
Latest CECC statistics reveal 49 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Taiwan as of March 12, with one death. A total of 80,793 cases have been identified in China and 43,814 in 111 other countries and territories. (SFC-E)
