Taiwan’s internationally-renowned graphic designer Xiao Qing-yang earned his fourth Grammy Award nomination Dec. 2 with the naming of local CD “Story Island” as a finalist for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package at the annual event.

“I am grateful for the repeated recognition of my works by the Recording Academy and would like to present this honor to all who love Taiwan,” Xiao said.

Xiao picked up his first design Grammy nomination in 2005 with “The Wandering Accordion,” following this up in 2008 with “White Horse” and 2009’s “Poems and Songs.”

According to Xiao, “Story Island,” which was released by up-and-coming talent Lee Cin-cin in January, won the attention of the judges for its distinctive traditional Chinese paper-cutting art.

Designed using a special laser technique, the packaging is one of Xiao’s most innovative productions to date. In addition, the CD booklet contains images that capture the beauty of Taiwan, as well as the devastation wrought by recent natural disasters such as Typhoon Morakot.

Of particular note is the CD’s back cover that features a skull map indicating places damaged by natural or man-made disasters.

Xiao said the nomination signifies his concern for Taiwan as well as people around the world. “It also proves that imagery transcends national borders,” he added.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be held Feb. 13 in Los Angeles. (JSM)
