Vice President Vincent C. Siew departed Taiwan at the head of a delegation May 10 to take part in celebrations marking Paraguay’s 200th independence anniversary.
“This is my first trip to Central and South America in my capacity as ROC vice president,” Siew said at the airport before boarding his flight.
“Besides attending Paraguay’s anniversary celebrations May 15, I will also visit Panama at the invitation of Vice President Juan Carlos Varela,” he said.
“Paraguay is our important diplomatic ally in South America,” Siew pointed out, adding that Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo visited Taiwan in March of this year.
“To mark this special friendship, the post offices of our two countries will issue commemorative stamps,” he said.
Siew also noted that the ROC’s diplomatic relations with Panama span more than 100 years. During his visit, he will call on President Ricardo Martinelli and Varela, who concurrently serves as minister of foreign relations, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern.
Siew will wrap up his trip May 20. (SB)
