A Central American Bank for Economic Integration country office began operations July 5 in Taiwan, underscoring the two sides’ shared commitment to deepening friendship and economic exchanges between Asia and Central America.

Situated in landmark Taipei 101, the facility was realized under an agreement concluded in April via videoconference by representatives from the ROC (Taiwan) Ministry of Finance and the Honduras-based multilateral development bank.

CABEI’s first office in Asia will function as a center for expanding its presence in the regional market, strengthening cooperation and serving member countries. It is also expected to assist in managing relationships with potential partners and contribute to the commercial exchange of goods, services and knowledge.

Dante Mossi, executive president of CABEI, said the bank has continued working with key stakeholders during the pandemic while growing its geographic presence. The office will support CABEI in delivering robust financial solutions and enabling access to more economic, financial and technical resources, he added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said “Congratulations to @CABEI_Org & @DanteMossi! The milestone #CABEI Country Office spotlights Taiwan’s strategic importance as a base for supporting the creation of trade, investment & financing opportunities in #Asia. The sky’s the limit for #Taiwan - #CentralAmerica cooperation.”

Taiwan joined CABEI in 1992 as one of the bank’s first extra-regional partners. Collaboration focuses on poverty reduction via programs spanning agriculture, education, food security, and micro, small and medium enterprises. (SFC-E)
