A 3-D printer created by XYZprinting, a subsidiary of Taiwan’s Kinpo Group, won the Envisioneering Innovation and Design Award Sept. 5 at this year’s IFA Berlin.

The da Vinci 1.0 AiO 3-D printer won the prize for combining the latest technology, materials and ecological design principles to produce an excellent, stylish design, the team of five international judges said.

According to the award organizer, the win was a remarkable achievement for a machine costing less than US$500. “This large area consumer printer uses ABS filament cartridges, works with PCs and Macs and is perhaps the best consumer-focused design today.”

The organizer added that the machine can produce an item up to 20 centimeters in height, length and breadth at resolutions of up to 100 micrometers.

“We don’t just want to be the most competitive on price, we also want to make the most innovative 3-D device,” XYZprinting CEO David Shen said after receiving the award at the world’s biggest consumer electronics and electrical appliances show.

“This recognition will boost our confidence in selling our products worldwide, and heralds our entry into the European market,” Shen added. (SSC-SDH)
