Taiwan is committed to enhancing its defensive capabilities while expanding cooperation with like-minded partners in order to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.

Despite Beijing’s ever-expanding campaign of coercion and accelerated tensions across the Taiwan Strait, the government is resolute in its determination to safeguard the country’s freedom and democratic way of life, Wu said.

Faced with military threats from China, senior officials from the U.S. have stated on many occasions that U.S. support for Taiwan is rock-solid while reaffirming the commitment to policies guided by the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances, the minister added.

Wu made the remarks during an exclusive interview with Pascal Nufer of Switzerland-based Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen for the “10 vor 10” program on Nov. 16.

According to Wu, Taiwan and Switzerland share the fundamental values of freedom and democracy. The government will continue collaboration in areas spanning politics and trade, he said.

Wu also took the opportunity to call for European countries including Switzerland to support Taiwan’s participation in international affairs and organizations.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “Minister Wu lays it bare in his interview with @SRF’s @chinacuckoo. Top talking points include China’s increased military threat against #Taiwan, tensions across the Taiwan Strait & the country’s warming relations with #Switzerland & the #EU.” (YCH-E)
