The ROC (Taiwan) government has terminated diplomatic relations with Nicaragua to uphold national dignity and sovereignty, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dec. 10.
Embassy and technical mission personnel are to be recalled, the MOFA said, adding that all bilateral cooperation projects and aid programs ended with immediate effect.
Taiwan, as a sincere and reliable friend to Nicaragua, worked with the Central American country to improve the livelihoods of the people and assist in national development, the MOFA said. The government deeply regrets that such long-standing friendship between people of both sides was disregarded by the Ortega government, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, as a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan has the right to conduct exchanges and develop diplomatic ties with other countries. The government will continue promoting steadfast diplomacy to expand Taiwan’s international participation while ensuring its rightful place in the world, the ministry said.
The government will spare no effort in protecting the well-being of the people, safeguarding national interests, and upholding peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “It’s with great regret we end diplomatic ties with Nicaragua. Long-standing friendship & successful cooperation benefiting the people of both countries were disregarded by the Ortega government. Taiwan remains unbowed & will continue as a force for good in the world.” (YCH-E)
