Minister without Portfolio Audrey Tang and Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S. head Hsiao Bi-khim highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to standing firm in the face of authoritarianism alongside other members of the free world during the Summit for Democracy.

Hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden, the Dec. 9 to 10 virtual event involved leaders of the public, civic and private sectors from more than 100 countries and territories. Tang issued a National Statement on the first day and followed up with a presentation on Taiwan’s journey to democratization on the second.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tang successfully shared Taiwan’s related achievements while spotlighting the government’s ongoing efforts to advance freedom, democracy, human rights and rule of law around the globe.

Taiwan is a front-line state resisting military, economic and diplomatic threats from China, the MOFA said. The country will continue cooperating closely with like-minded partners such as the U.S. in defending the shared values of the democratic world, the ministry added.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “@audreyt & @bikhim shared #Taiwan’s democratic success story at the #SummitForDemocracy. Noninvited #China responded by inducing #Nicaragua to sever diplomatic ties. We thank the free world for choosing to #StandWithTaiwan. Watch Minister Tang deliver the National Statement.”

MOFA Twitter followed up with second tweet “Watch Digital Minister
@audreyt’s Day 2 presentation at the #SummitForDemocracy on #Taiwan’s journey to democratization. For the country’s 23.5 million people, democracy is akin to social technology: It can only be enriched through collaborative efforts. Yes! #TaiwanCanHelp.” (DL-E)
