The statement issued Sunday by the Chair of the Group of Seven Foreign and Development Minsters’ Meeting, stressing the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and their concern about China’s coercive economic policies, is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Dec. 13.
According to the MOFA, it is the third time the G-7 has released a statement of support for the cross-strait status quo under the U.K.’s G-7 presidency, following the G-7 Foreign and Development Ministers’ communique in May and the Carbis Bay G-7 Communique in June.
Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are now a focal point in the region and around the world, the MOFA said, citing the U.S.- Japan Summit, the U.S.-Republic of Korea Summit, the EU-Japan Summit and the Japan-Australia 2+2 Foreign and Defence Ministerial Consultations.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “We sincerely thank the #G7 foreign & development ministers for discussing the “importance of peace & stability across the #Taiwan Strait” & expressing concern about #China's “coercive economic policies.””
As a responsible Indo-Pacific country, Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded partners such as the G-7 and the EU to deepen collaboration based on shared democratic principles, strengthen the resilience of the global democratic alliance, support democratic development, and ensure regional peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development, the ministry said.
