Taiwan is committed to strengthening its defensive capabilities while deepening ties with diplomatic allies and like-minded partners, according to Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu.
China’s wolf-warrior diplomacy is turning democracies in Europe towards Taiwan, which is recognized as a force for good in the world, Wu said. Numerous resolutions passed in support of Taiwan and visits by many European countries’ politicians demonstrate the importance they place on the country’s geopolitical and global supply chain positions, he added.
Chinese threats against Taiwan are intensifying, as evidenced by around 1,000 sorties by warplanes last year and ongoing cyberattack activities, hybrid warfare and disinformation campaigns, Wu said.
Wu made the remarks during an exclusive English-language interview for a program aired April 12 by TaiwanPlus.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s threatening behavior towards Taiwan share certain similarities, Wu said. The government’s joining with the democratic world’s condemnation of Russian aggression and its participation in international sanctions are supported by allies, he added.
Ties with each of Taiwan’s 14 diplomatic allies is crucial to the country, Wu said. Diplomatic recognition of the country as a sovereign, independent state in international bodies such as the UN, WHO and UNFCCC where allies speak up for Taiwan and back the country’s global participation was of great significance, he added.
