Taiwan is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring digital transformation remains a central plank in the government’s policy to reduce carbon emissions, according to Digital Minister Audrey Tang Sept. 12.
President Tsai Ing-wen has set a goal for Taiwan to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, Tang said, adding that various measures have been rolled out to fast-track progress, including greenhouse gas awareness and verification tools to facilitate carbon indexing and cloud-based platforms launched by the Administration for Digital Industries under the Ministry of Digital Affairs for small and medium enterprises.
Tang made the remarks while participating in the session “Towards an EcoInternet - A Multistakeholder Dialogue on Policy Making and Strategising for a Sustainable and Energy Efficient Internet” during the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum via video link from Taipei City.
Staged physically and virtually from Singapore, the overarching theme of the three-day event is “People at the Centre: Envisioning a community-led Internet that is inclusive, sustainable and trusted.”
According to Tang, the Cabinet-level National Communications Commission plans to shut down Taiwan’s 3G network by 2024 as a final transition to 4G Voice over Long-Term Evolution, which will translate into an approximate annual power saving of 100 million kilowatt-hours.
