A letter from Formosa Club chapters in the Caribbean and Latin America sent to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change calling for Taiwan’s participation is sincerely appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 10.

Signed by 411 members of the club, the letter requested that UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell should invite Taiwan to its 27th Conference of the Parties taking place Nov. 6-18 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, and support the country’s meaningful engagement in mechanisms relevant to the Paris Agreement, an accord adopted at COP21 outlining adaptation, financing and mitigation policies for reducing greenhouse gases.

The document cites Taiwan’s announcement last year to reach the goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and the country’s commitment to investing US$30 billion by 2030 to promote transformation in areas spanning energy, industries, people’s living and society.

As the world’s 21st largest economy and a global leader in the high-tech industry, the letter said, Taiwan is both willing and able to contribute more in fast-tracking progress toward a net-zero goal.

According to the MOFA, as a responsible member of the international community, Taiwan will continue working with allies and like-minded partners to jointly overcome the challenges and impacts brought by global climate change. (YCH-E)
