President Tsai Ing-wen named Chen Chien-jen as the new premier to replace current incumbent Su Tseng-chang during a news conference at the Presidential Office Jan. 27 in Taipei City. Tsai also took the opportunity to thank Su for his tireless commitment over the past four years.
Tsai said that Chen, who previously served as Vice President from 2016 to 2020, was the right candidate to assume the position as his benevolent and selfless qualities were dedicated to serving the country.
According to Tsai, the Cabinet led by Chen will implement new priorities. A top goal is to adjust pandemic prevention measures stage by stage so that people can return to normal life in the post-pandemic era, she said.
Another equally important goal is to review the social care system, Tsai said, adding that the new administration will focus further on issues such as childcare, long-term care, student loans, labor shortages and anti-fraud.
There will be continued improvement in fundamental infrastructure, Tsai said and added that the government will ensure a livelihood for agricultural and fishing industry workers to enhance the competitiveness of agricultural products.
Another highlighted mission is to continue development of the six core strategic industries, the president said. Unveiled by Tsai during her inauguration address in May 2020, the industries are information and digital technology; cybersecurity; biotech and medical technology; green and renewable energy; national defense; and strategic stockpiles.
In response, Chen said the new Cabinet will work hard to strengthen Taiwan’s economic, environmental and social resilience to ensure quality of life for the country’s 23 million people. (YCH-E)
