President Tsai Ing-wen said Feb. 10 that Taiwan will keep fast-tracking the development of cybersecurity technologies while tackling related threats from foreign actors.
The government is leaving no stone unturned in creating a safe, secure and stable digital environment for the people, Tsai said, citing the establishment of the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the National Institute of Cyber Security, as well as a recent meeting convened by the Cabinet to improve existing protection mechanisms.
According to Tsai, cybersecurity is national security. The goal of the NICS is to advance cybersecurity R&D, applications and services while continuously strengthening Taiwan’s digital resilience, she added.
Tsai made the remarks while attending the plaque unveiling ceremony of the NICS in Taipei City. Other high-profile attendees at the event included Vice Premier Cheng Wen-tsan, Digital Minister Audrey Tang and National Science and Technology Council Minister Wu Tsung-tsong.
Cybersecurity is an essential component of the six core strategic industries, which were unveiled by President Tsai during her 2020 inauguration and build on the five-plus-two innovative industries program. The other key areas targeted for growth are green energy; information and digital technology; biotech and medical technology; national defense; and strategic stockpile industries. (DL-E)
