A bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation touched down Feb. 19 in Taiwan on a five-day visit to discuss bilateral security and economic and trade developments, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Led by Rep. Ro Khanna, the group comprises Rep. Jake Auchincloss, Rep. Tony Gonzales and Rep. Jonathan Jackson.

Highlights of the delegation’s itinerary include an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen and visits to various ministries. They will also meet with local business representatives to discuss industrial and technological cooperation.

According to the MOFA, delegation members are staunch supporters of Taiwan, as evidenced by their advocacy for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

In addition, Gonzales visited Taiwan in 2021 during the pandemic, while Khanna proposed the U.S.-Taiwan Public Health Protection Act last year, the MOFA said.

This is the second group of legislators to visit Taiwan during the current U.S. congressional session, demonstrating strong support for the country, the MOFA said, adding that the trip will help delegation members gain a better understanding of Taiwan’s current situation while deepening bilateral partnership across the board.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “A warm welcome to the #US delegation! The visit of @RepRoKhanna, @RepTonyGonzales, @RepAuchincloss & @Rep_Jackson at the start of the 118th Congress demonstrates the strength of the bipartisan support for #Taiwan on Capitol Hill. We wish our friends a successful 5-day stay.” (YCH-E)
