Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang arrived in Tuvalu Feb. 18 for a 10-day visit, underscoring the government’s commitment to deepening the relationship with the Pacific ally.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tien’s delegation comprises academics, experts and business representatives from sectors spanning aquatic product processing, clean energy, information and communications technology, infrastructure construction and marine resource conservation. The aim of this visit is to explore mutual business opportunities, the ministry added.
During the visit, Tien and his delegation called on Tuvalu’s Governor-General Tofiga Falani, Prime Minister Kausea Natano, Foreign Minister Simon Kofe and former Prime Minister Enele Sopoaga, the MOFA said, adding that discussions centered on initiatives to bolster cooperative projects, combat climate change and maintain a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Delegation members also expressed deep appreciation to Tuvalu for voicing support for Taiwan in the international arena.
The trip follows Natano’s state visit to Taiwan in 2022, the MOFA said, adding that the government will continue working closely with Tuvalu across a wide range of domains, furthering the two sides’ reciprocal partnership and safeguarding peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “A big thank you to FM @Simon_Kofe for his generous hospitality! Deputy Minister Tien’s productive series of meetings with @TuvaluPM & other key @TuvaluGov officials fortified #Taiwan-#Tuvalu partnerships promoting regional peace, climate justice & sustainable prosperity.” (YCH-E)
