Since 2006, the commission issues funds to students and young people aged between 18 and 35 to initiate a research and visiting program through cooperation with local civic organizations. Its stated purpose is to encourage the young to take part in both local communities and on the international stage.
National Taiwan University students’ research titled “Mose project: the adaptation strategy to coexist with water in Venice,” in collaboration with the nonprofit Community Empowering Society, is one of the program’s successful examples. The students shared their findings with local nongovernmental groups and government agencies, such as the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction.
Other initiatives the commission sponsored last year include Taiwan Environmental Action Network’s study of the Bay-Delta Conservation Plan in California; an NTU student team’s study about the development of ecotourism in Capulalpam de Mendez, Mexico; and an exchange program with NGOs in Vietnam, conducted by Taipei-based Organization of Urban Re’s, regarding environmental policies and urban development.
