The joint leaders’ statement released by the U.S. and Australia reiterating their support for cross-strait peace and stability is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Oct. 26.
Following their meeting Oct. 25 in Washington, D.C., U.S. President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a statement that reaffirmed their shared opposition to unilateral changes to the Taiwan Strait status quo and called for the peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues through dialogue without the use of coercion, threats or force.
According to the MOFA, China has used various pretexts to escalate military intimidation against Taiwan, increasing the risk to regional security and raising the concern of the international community. The clear global consensus is to preserve the cross-strait status quo, the ministry said, citing other joint statements issued this year after the U.S.-EU Summit, the U.S.-Japan-South Korea trilateral leaders’ summit, the Australia-U.S. Ministerial Consultations, the Group of Seven Summit and the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
The latest U.S.-Australia statement expressed similar sentiments as those made following the two leaders’ meeting in Hiroshima in May, the MOFA said. As a responsible member of the global community, Taiwan will continue to work with Australia, the U.S. and other like-minded partners to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, it added.
