The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed appreciation Nov. 16 for U.S. President Joe Biden’s statement that the U.S. opposes any unilateral change to the status quo in the Taiwan Strait.

According to the MOFA, Biden made the remarks during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping Nov. 15 in Woodside, California. Biden emphasized that differences should be resolved peacefully, as it is in the international community’s best interest to keep the region peaceful and stable.

The ministry said that Biden also urged China to exercise restraint in the matter of military activity in the strait and neighboring areas. The MOFA was glad to see the U.S. president again reiterate his country’s firm stance on the issue.

Biden has repeatedly voiced his support of Taiwan, the ministry said, contributing to the international community’s consensus about the importance of maintaining cross-strait peace and stability, including such examples as this year’s Australia-United States Joint Leaders’ statement, the release made during the Trilateral Leaders’ Summit at Camp David, and those issued during the G7 Hiroshima Summit 2023 and the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

As a responsible member of international society, Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense capabilities and deepen partnerships by collaborating with like-minded partners to defend the rules-based international order and safeguard the freedom and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific, the MOFA said.
