A literary festival combining book fairs, reading, storytelling and theater commenced Sept. 24 at Huashan 1914 Creative Park in northern Taiwan’s Taipei City and Pier-2 Art Center in the southern port metropolis of Kaohsiung.

Organized by Taiwan Cultural-Creative Development Foundation, the event focuses on three local writers: Chan Hung-chih, Lin Liang and Ping Lu, recognizing their extensive contributions to sparking Taiwan’s literary imagination. Other featured cultural icons include historian Chuang Yung-ming, novelist Huang Chun-ming, artist Lei Hsiang and poet Wu Sheng.

All of the literary luminaries will read signature pieces at 49 events during the five-day fiesta, with nine special Holo sessions scheduled exclusively for Kaohsiung.

TCCDF Chairman Wang Jung-wen said Wordwave Festival aims to promote homegrown literature by highlighting its many possibilities through musical, recitative and theatrical interpretations.

“Taiwan boasts the most nurturing and vibrant environment for Chinese-language writings in the world. In addition to spotlighting literary works through reading and performing, we are striving to hammer home the importance of translation.

“By continually expanding the global reach of Taiwan literature via translation forums and workshops, we anticipate more multilingual readers discovering local writers.”

Along with the main venues, various bookstores and cultural hot spots in Kaohsiung and Taipei will host an array of festival activities this year.

Other noteworthy participants include Golden Melody Award-nominated singers Yoga Lin, Wang Yu-jun and Waa Wei, as well as this year’s Radio Golden Bell Awards winner Ma Shih-fang. They are expected to reinvent pop songs as a form of poetry for the event. (YHC-JSM)
