Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim expressed her hope June 26 that Taiwan artists will showcase the country’s creativity and vibrancy during the upcoming 2024 Cultural Olympiad in Paris, the Presidential Office said.

Hsiao made the remarks at a predeparture ceremony in Taipei City. According to the Ministry of Culture, a total of 22 performing arts groups comprising over 120 members will participate in the event from Jul. 27 to Aug. 10, presenting 60 shows spanning dance, music, opera and visual performances.

This is the first time that a large national team has been organized to participate in the Cultural Olympiad, Hsiao said, adding that it is an honor to present the diversity and resilience of Taiwan to international audiences during the centennial anniversary of the last Olympic Games held in Paris.

The Cultural Olympiad helps draw more attention to the 2024 Summer Olympics by injecting cultural elements, Hsiao said, adding that she is pleased to see more arts added this time.

The vice president went on to express appreciation to participants for boosting global recognition of Taiwan’s soft power and anticipated that their upcoming performances would strengthen the people of Taiwan’s connections with the world.

Economics make a country strong, and culture makes a country great, Hsiao said, adding that Taiwan’s participation in the 2024 Cultural Olympiad will demonstrate the country’s staunch belief in freedom, equality, ethnic diversity and inclusion. (YCH-E)
