The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced Aug. 2 its welcome of Canada as a full partner in the Global Cooperation and Training Framework and stated that it hopes to see more like-minded partners follow suit to help build a resilient, safe and sustainable world for all.

According to the MOFA, the GCTF was inaugurated by Taiwan and the U.S. in 2015, and later joined by Japan and Australia. The initiative aims to leverage Tawan’s expertise to organize training programs on global issues and enhance regional capacity and multilateral cooperation, the ministry said, adding that it also expands the country’s presence on the international stage.

The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei said on its official Facebook page that it is happy to take its GCTF participation to the next level by becoming a full partner. This shows the Canadian government’s commitment to expanding ties with Taiwan and maintaining the status quo in the Taiwan Strait under its Indo-Pacific Strategy. The American Institute in Taiwan also welcomed the development with a post from its official Facebook account.

Over the past nine years, the GCTF has organized 78 workshops on topics including disaster prevention, energy efficiency, humanitarian assistance, information security, media literacy, law enforcement, public health and women’s empowerment. More than 9,000 experts, officials and private sector representatives from 131 countries have participated in these events to date. (SFC-E)
