The “Building Climate Change Resilience for Small Island States” workshop was held Aug. 15-16 in Tuvalu under the Global Cooperation and Training Framework to address pressing global issues and solutions.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the event was the first GCTF workshop to be held in Tuvalu, and was jointly organized by Tuvalu, Taiwan, the U.S., Australia and Japan. It involved more than 60 participants from the organizing countries, as well as Palau, the Marshall Islands and Sweden.
Attendees of note included Brenton Garlick from the Australian High Commission in Tuvalu; Michael Glees from the U.S. Agency for International Development; and Tuvalu’s Maina Talia, minister of home affairs, climate change, and environment, the MOFA said.
In addition to sharing policy measures and discussing methods of expanding multilateral cooperation, workshop participants also took field trips to land reclamation construction sites and floating solar energy systems under the Tuvalu Coastal Adaption Project, the ministry added.
Since its launch in 2015 by Taiwan and the U.S., the GCTF has established a critical platform for facilitating discussion of solutions to global issues. The initiative was later joined by Japan, Australia and Canada, and affiliated events have been held outside the founding countries since 2021. (SFC-E)
