The 2024 Michelin Guide Taiwan was unveiled Aug. 27, with three local restaurants receiving the coveted three stars, five establishments earning two stars and 41 eateries landing one star.

The list included restaurants based in Taipei city, Taichung City in central Taiwan and the southern city of Kaohsiung. Le Palais, Taïrroir in Taipei and JL Studio in Taichung retained their rank in the three-star category.

In addition, six establishments were awarded the Michelin Green Star for their sustainable practices and dining experiences that combine culinary excellence with eco-friendly commitment. They are EMBERS, Hosu, Little Tree Food (Da’an Road), Mountain and Sea House, Yangming Spring (Shilin) in Taipei; and Thomas Chien in Kaohsiung.

Other significant honors included the Young Chef Award, which was given to Chen Ting-yu from newly selected restaurant, huist, in Taichung. The guide said Chen showed creativity and solid skills in showcasing the Taiwan culinary scene and elevating its image.

According to the guide, the Service Award went to Hsu Yun-shan from one-star restaurant Ban Bo in Taipei for her impeccable, warm and thoughtful style when interacting with diners. The Sommelier Award was presented to Yoyo Tseng from Taichung’s Yuen Ji, newly awarded with one star, noting that Tseng excels in creating intriguing pairings and enhancing the flavors of traditional Taiwan dishes with well-judged matches.

Speaking at the news conference, Lin Kuo-shian, administrative deputy minister of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, said Taiwan’s unique geography nurtures abundant food ingredients. Dishes made through an in-depth understanding and a full use of these ingredients show a respect for the land while demonstrating a sustainable combination of environment and innovations, he added.

Following Lin’s remarks, Tourism Administration Director-General Chou Yung-hui said the unveiling of the Michelin Guide is an important occasion to show the world Taiwan cuisine in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. The administration will continue to work with its overseas offices to further promote Taiwan’s gourmet food and all-year-round tourism, he added. (YCH-E)
