The Environmental Management Administration’s International Workshop on Sustainable Protection and Restoration of Soil and Groundwater and Resource Circulation is a key part of the Ministry of Environment’s goal to enhance environment-focused governance among Asia-Pacific nations.
At the opening ceremony Oct. 28 at National Cheng Kung University in the southern city of Tainan, EMA Director General Yen Hsu-ming pointed out that Taiwan was the first country in Asia to announce regulations on the management of soil and underground water. In the 24 years since, Taiwan has devoted time, energy and resources to the construction of a comprehensive system for the reuse and remediation of polluted environments.
Yen noted that the EMA founded the Technical Working Group on Remediation for Soil and Groundwater Pollution of Asian Countries in 2011, adding that Taiwan has continuously contributed its experience and facilitated exchanges with regional partners, who have since placed an emphasis on the protection of soil and groundwater.
Experts from 11 countries were invited to attend the six-day professional courses, including Australia, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. A meeting on water environment research for sustainability also kicked off Oct. 28 at NCKU, bringing together professionals from across the Indo-Pacific, the ministry added. (POC-E)
