The Ministry of Economic Affairs’ Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection staged the 31st Asia-Pacific Legal Metrology Forum Nov. 6-8 in Taipei City, hosting the meeting for the second time since it joined the organization in 1994.
Founded in 1994, APLMF aims to improve trade in the Asia-Pacific by removing barriers through the development of confidence in legal metrology bodies throughout the region. It assists developing countries in the construction of a firm legal metrology foundation to ensure fair transactions, secure livelihoods and environmental protection, the BSMI said.
According to the BSMI, the APLMF is convened annually, and during the forum, participants review existing projects and are briefed on new ones to offer insight into trends as well as the current conditions and prospects of related organizations in the region.
Through collaborations between member economies, transnational trade is consolidated, regulations are brought into alignment and the Asia-Pacific market is becoming more transparent, the BSMI said, adding that reliability and accuracy have been enhanced in the fields of energy and health care, among others.
Taiwan’s commitment to the advancement of metrology, including such medical tools as the electronic sphygmomanometer and electronic thermometer, in addition to the vehicle speedometer for law enforcement, has not gone unrecognized. The BSMI said that in 2006, 2009 and 2019, Taiwan was awarded prizes for its contributions to APLMF.
This year’s assembly focused on measuring the quality of agricultural products, hydrogen energy and medicine, among other topics. It is hoped that the seminar’s working group meetings, keynote speeches and discussions will continue to facilitate economic advancement in the region, the BSMI concluded. (POC-E)
